Executive Director

The Executive Director is the chief executive and lead public representative of the U.S.-Syria Business Council. This position is responsible for advancing the Council’s mission of promoting ethical, lawful, and strategic U.S.-Syria commercial engagement through high-level leadership, operational excellence, and deep policy and cultural fluency.

The Executive Director will lead member engagement, shape international programs, ensure regulatory compliance (especially U.S. sanctions law), and oversee the Council’s staff, fundraising, partnerships, and communications efforts.

As the Council’s primary host and liaison for visiting delegations, government ministers, business leaders, and institutional partners in Washington, D.C., the Executive Director will spearhead the planning of welcoming events, formal meetings, working dinners, site visits, and business tours. This position requires a strong public presence, impeccable hosting ability, and the flexibility to work outside traditional hours to accommodate high-level engagements and evolving priorities.

Leadership & Strategy
  • Drive the strategic vision and operational execution of the Council’s mission

 

  • Represent USSBC to U.S. government agencies, business leaders, international institutions, and Syrian-American stakeholders

 

  • Lead the design and execution of programs, briefings, delegations, and bilateral initiatives

Governance & Board Relations
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee

 

  • Prepare reports, strategic recommendations, and updates for board meetings

 

  • Collaborate with board officers on governance, compliance, and membership strategy

Compliance & Legal Oversight
  • Ensure all activities comply with U.S. federal laws, including OFAC regulations, export controls, and 501(c)(6) nonprofit guidelines

 

  • Liaise with legal counsel and government contacts on licensing or regulatory matters

 

  • Maintain ethical risk management protocols for international engagement

Membership & Stakeholder Development
  • Lead outreach to potential corporate and institutional members aligned with the Council’s mission

 

  • Work with the Board of Directors to drive member recruitment, and oversee retention, benefits, and engagement strategy

 

  • Build and sustain trust-based relationships with diaspora, business, and civil society actors

Team Leadership & Operations
  • Manage and mentor staff (VPs, Directors, Program & Operations personnel)

 

  • Oversee budget, program delivery, and administrative systems

 

  • Coordinate with the Managing Director – Syria to ensure alignment of U.S. and field operations

Communications & Public Engagement
  • Serve as the public voice of the Council in media, forums, and policy roundtables

 

  • Oversee communication strategy and message alignment with mission and compliance

 

  • Deliver presentations, publish op-eds, and participate in national and international panels
